If you run an ecommerce website, it can be a challenge knowing how to setup your site for optimal sales. What should you include? Where should you funnel your visitors? How should the sales journey unfold? Luckily, there’s always one place you can start: products. Your visitors come to your site because they want to make a purchase. So what should you do to make this easier on them? Here are three tips for organizing your products on your website to enhance your visitor’s user experience.

Be Stingy When Creating Primary Navigation

When you’re trying to get your products sold through your website, it can be tempting to try to link to them anywhere and everywhere. And while you may think that this will increase the chances of a sale being made, the opposite may actually prove to be true. According to Moz.com, only your most important content should be linked to in the primary navigation or on the home page. This means that you should reserve designated links in the navigation or on the home page to your products that you deem most important, not just to all the products you have available.

Don’t Overwhelm Your Audience

In some cases, having a lot of variety is a good thing. However, when it comes to the products you have on your website, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Dan Wang, a contributor to Shopify.com, shares that having too many products can easily overwhelm your audience. If you find yourself having a lot of products that you just can’t pare down, you should group similar products together through category pages so all your products are still available but not each individual products has it’s very own page in the navigation. This may drastically increase your sales numbers.

Know What Your Visitors Expect When Shopping

One of the hardest things to balance when organizing the products on your website is how to present them in the navigation. To ensure this doesn’t get out of hand, Justin James, a contributor to TechRepublic.com, suggests essentially sticking to the navigation tabs that your visitors will expect to see when attempting to shop online. Some of these pages should include products, services, shopping cart, support pages and more. By laying out the product pages and navigation in a way that is intuitive to your visitors, they’ll have a much easier time sorting through your products in order to find the exact one they’ve been looking for.

You don’t have to be overwhelmed by the amount of products you have to include on your website. Simply use some of the tips mentioned above to help you organize and display your products to your visitors in a beautiful and useful way.
